Carly’s Story
God gave me a word this morning. He simply said…Rise. That’s it… just the word. But as I started to think about the meaning of that word I started to put together a bunch of thoughts regarding the condition of my heart and regarding maybe some of yours.
Lately I’ve been struggling with some health issues, some loneliness, disappointment, stress, body image issues and exhaustion. That can really mess with your head space. I’ve found myself really wallowing in it and not handling it like I know I should. On the outside you would never be able to tell that I was really struggling or not feeling well. I have this hard outer shell that only the people I trust can crack. Most of the time, I just carry on at autopilot.
So back to the word I got this morning. The definition of Rise is: move from a lower position to a higher one; come or go up. The synonyms: stand up, get to one’s feet, get up, jump up, leap up.
This is not only for me but for these kids that I’m raising. I need to show them what it’s like to rise. I need to show them what it’s like to keep going through the hard things. From the moment I became a single mom, I had to remind myself every day to rise. When things get too hard, I have to remind myself to rise. And I’ve also been given the duty of teaching my children to rise. Every time one of them goes through hard things I have to teach them to rise. It’s okay to feel the feelings and have the emotions and work through it. But at the end of the day you still rise. You just do it …you keep going. Even if it’s just getting one foot and then the other out of the bed that morning it’s still rising. Even if it’s just stepping outside and feeling the sun on your face for a minute it’s still rising. Deciding to laugh a little, smile a little, dance a little, scream a little….you are rising. You can do this! You can rise! We were not meant to dwell in sadness, alone and hurting. We are meant to rise up and help others rise with us. Like the sun with every new day, we can start afresh. Whether it’s baby steps or a huge leap, I encourage you to take this word to heart. Since receiving this word, I have had the song “Rise Up” by Andra Day in my heart and mind:
And I’ll rise up
I’ll rise like the day
I’ll rise up
I’ll rise unafraid
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousand times again
And I’ll rise up
High like the waves
I’ll rise up
In spite of the ache
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousands times again
We got this girls. We can rise.
Rising Together,
Carly
