My friend called me and said, “You’re not going to believe what God did!” Really? Try me. She started to pour out her story, “I needed a dress for my son’s wedding. It’s only a month away. It had to be silver, and long, and perfect for the mother of the groom.” Turns out, buying a new dress, especially a long formal dress, was not in my friend’s budget. Not in her budget, and most certainly not in her wallet. So what did she do? She prayed. “God, I need a dress for this wedding. I don’t have the money. Please help me find a good bargain.” After running to an appointment in a neighboring town later that week, she stopped in a dress shop. There, on a clearance rack, was a perfectly suited dress, orginially $239, for just $47.00!
Does God care about the little details of our lives? The things that matter just to us? Does He still hear our prayers and answer them? There’s a promise to that effect that we can hold onto if we’re trying to do right and follow Him.
“You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.” – John 16:24 NLT
When we trust God with the smallest details, the little things we care about, we invite Him to work in our lives on a very personal level. That means we invite in His presence and His strength. That’s powerful. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter most. It’s when God pays attention to the little things, that we are most touched by His love.

Just to be sure, here’s another story…
Oh, now the horse was lame. A few minutes earlier he was fine, but now he had a pronounced limp and was holding his hoof up. I was talking with the program directer of the Horse sanctuary we are involved in, and my daughter and her mentor called us both over. Sure enough, my daughter wouldn’t be riding that day. The program director disappeared in to the barn, and came back with a bucket of sparkly hoof polishes and braiding ribbons.
To a 10-year-old’s delight, she was able to spend her session grooming and making her horse “beautiful” while he was being looked after. I could have joined her, but for one thing. I was wearing sandals. If you’ve ever been around horses, you know that spending time with them in sandals is kissing your feet goodbye. I prayed, “Lord, I need some cowboy boots.” My mind went to my steel toe combat boots left over from the army. I prayed again, “Lord, I need some cute cowboy boots.” I wanted to be able to spend the time with my daughter in the barn, not on the other side of the fence. I really wanted to volunteer with the kids, and work with the horses. None of that was going to happen in sandals. Quality boots are pricey, and they weren’t in my budget that day. Asking God for them was the only good option I seemed to have. Seven days later we were going to watch a professional rodeo. I thought maybe I would find a boot vendor with some good deals, but I knew in my heart that even those good deals weren’t in my budget. I had worked hard to keep us within our means, and didn’t want to let that go. As we walked around the little town waiting on the rodeo to open, we passed a small retail store that carries new stuff from previous seasons. I had never shopped there before, but I noticed boots in the window, so we went in. Sure enough, the only pair they offered in my size was a brand new pair of top-notch Justin boots. The price was $30, a small fraction of the original price. God heard my prayer, acknowleged my need for equipment, and provided for it at a price that fit within my means. He did care about the little details that mattered just to me!
Additionally, I was able to avoid overspending at the beautiful rodeo boot displays that night. More proof that when we give God the reins in our life, His Holy Spirit does help keep us from the stumbling we’re sure to do on our own. “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” – Galations 5:16 NLT
